Euclides da Cunha lies in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Bahia, and its name honours the writer of Os Sertões, the classic account of the Canudos war, which took place in this part of the state. The town's streets form a compact, fairly regular grid that stands out clearly against the sparse land around it.
The BR-116 highway, one of Brazil's longest north–south routes, runs past the town and gives the map a strong straight axis. Smaller roads branch off toward nearby communities, and outside the built-up area the terrain is dry scrub, with small reservoirs and seasonal streams scattered across it.
