Feidh el Botma lies in the Djelfa province of Algeria, on the high plateaus between the Tell Atlas and the Saharan Atlas. This is steppe country: dry, open and traditionally pastoral. The town sits within it as a compact cluster of streets. From above, the built area is small and clearly defined, and roads leave it in long, straight lines across the plain.
Inside the town the street plan is fairly regular, with blocks arranged along a few main roads and newer housing added at the edges. Around it, a street map shows almost nothing: tracks, seasonal watercourses and scattered settlements. That emptiness is part of the picture, and it makes the town stand out sharply on the page.
The Djelfa region has long been associated with sheep herding and with the Ouled Naïl, whose culture is closely tied to these plateaus.
