Fermo Map Poster
Fermo sits on a hill a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic coast in the Marche. On a map, the old town is unmistakable: streets wind in rings around the summit of the Girfalco, where the cathedral stands, and lanes and stairways connect the levels like the rings of a tree.
Below the centre lies Piazza del Popolo, a long arcaded square, and underground are Roman cisterns built in the first century, among the best-preserved in Italy. The town library contains the Sala del Mappamondo, a hall named after the large eighteenth-century globe it houses, which is a fitting detail for a map.
