Friesoythe is a town in the Cloppenburg district of Lower Saxony, in the flat country between the Ems and the Weser. The Soeste river runs past the centre, and around it the land is crossed by drainage ditches, farm roads and the straight lines of reclaimed moorland.
The town centre is compact, with a small core and residential streets spreading outwards across the plain. North of town, the Küstenkanal runs east to west, one of the long waterways that shaped the drainage and settlement of this former peat landscape.
A Friesoythe map poster reflects a town largely rebuilt after it was heavily destroyed at the end of the Second World War in April 1945. Today it appears on the map as a tidy, modest town surrounded by fields laid out with the regularity of reclaimed land.
