Hondarribia sits at the mouth of the Bidasoa river, where Spain meets France on the Bay of Biscay. On a map the estuary is the defining shape: the Bay of Txingudi, with Hendaye on the opposite shore. The Spanish and French towns face each other so closely that they read as one composition divided by the border.
The old town stands on a rise, still enclosed by its fortified walls. A tight pattern of narrow streets leads up to the castle of Charles V, now a parador. Below it, the fishermen's quarter of La Marina spreads in a looser pattern toward the harbor and the beach. The runway of San Sebastián Airport cuts a straight line along the estuary.
To the west, the slopes of Mount Jaizkibel rise straight from the sea and frame the town against the Atlantic. A Hondarribia map poster, known in Spanish as Fuenterrabía, brings together walls, estuary, border and coast. It is a small map with an unusual amount of detail.
