Galapagar lies in the northwest of the Community of Madrid, on the rising ground between the capital and the Sierra de Guadarrama. On the map the historic centre forms a small, dense cluster. The rest of the municipality spreads out as housing estates with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, separated by patches of open, rocky countryside.
The town has grown strongly in recent decades as people moved out of Madrid for more space. This shows clearly from above. Instead of a single compact grid, the map has separate clusters linked by country roads. The Guadarrama river valley and the mountain slopes decide where building could go.
