Gaoqiao is a town in the northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country north of the Yangtze. From above, the built-up area follows the valley floor, with streets squeezed between slopes and roads winding up the hillsides to scattered villages.
This part of Chongqing is known for its steep terrain and terraced farmland, with small rivers and streams draining toward the Yangtze system. On a map the land appears crumpled, and roads rarely run straight for long, following contours instead.
