Gardner is a small city in northern Worcester County, Massachusetts. It is known as the Chair City because of its long history of furniture making. Its best-known symbol is an oversized chair that stands in the city as a tribute to that industry, and Mount Wachusett rises a short distance to the south.
The map shows a New England industrial town shaped by hills and water. The downtown is compact, with older mill-era streets. Around it, residential neighbourhoods follow the uneven ground, and several lakes and ponds, including Crystal Lake, create open spaces between them. Wooded land presses in on all sides.
A Gardner map poster shows how the city fits its terrain: the streets bend around hills, and the lakes break up the grid. The roads leading out towards neighbouring towns give the image structure, and the whole sheet has the irregular, lived-in character of an older American city.
