Garhi Khairo lies in Jacobabad District in the north of Sindh, close to the border with Balochistan, on the wide alluvial plain west of the Indus. The land here is almost perfectly flat, so from above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set within a large, regular pattern of fields. Canals and field channels cross the landscape in long, straight lines.
The population figure refers to the wider area rather than only the town itself, and many people live in villages among the farmland. The region is known for its extremely hot summers, and agriculture depends almost entirely on irrigation from the Indus canal system, which gives the map its distinctive geometric grain.
