Garko is a small town in Gombe State, in northeastern Nigeria, in the savanna country not far from the state capital. On the map, it is a modest cluster of lanes and compounds, with the main roads running through it to neighbouring settlements. The land around it is largely open, so the town's shape reads clearly against it.
Farming shapes much of the surrounding landscape. In the dry season the countryside is broad and spare, and the rains bring green fields and seasonal streams. Small watercourses, footpaths and tracks cross the land in thin, irregular lines, adding quiet detail to the areas beyond the built-up centre of the town.
