Gatesville is the seat of Coryell County, set in the rolling ranch country west of Waco. Its map follows a classic Texas arrangement: a courthouse square at the centre, a grid of residential streets running outward, and highways leaving town toward the neighbouring counties. The Leon River loops past close to town, adding a soft, meandering line to an otherwise orderly plan.
The town takes its name from Fort Gates, a frontier army post established nearby in the 1840s. The military connection continues today with Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood, to the south. Gatesville is also known for its cluster of state correctional facilities, and it has long called itself the spur capital of Texas, thanks to a large collection of cowboy spurs kept in the town.
