Geidam is in the far north of Yobe State in Nigeria, where the landscape turns toward the Sahel and the border with Niger is not far away. The town sits near the Komadugu Yobe, the river that gives the state its name and flows east toward Lake Chad. On the map it appears as a dense cluster of lanes and compounds surrounded by open, lightly marked land.
Water sets the shape of the region. The Komadugu Yobe's channels spread out and shift with the seasons, leaving floodplain fields and dry beds in the landscape. Roads leave Geidam in a few clear directions, joining it to other towns in the state and forming simple, strong lines across the plain.
