General Pico lies in the northeast of La Pampa province, on the wide, flat grassland and farmland of the Argentine pampas. It was founded in the early twentieth century as the railways pushed across the plains, and it has since grown into the province's second-largest city.
Its map is a clear example of the Argentine planned town: a regular grid of square blocks, with the central plaza as the fixed point and avenues forming broader lines through the pattern. Railway tracks cross the city and shape its districts, and the grid stops cleanly where farmland begins.
