Ghātāl is a town in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, on the banks of the Shilabati river. The land here is low and flat, part of the wider Gangetic delta plain, and water shapes the map. The river curves past the town, smaller channels cut through the surrounding fields, and the streets gather on the higher ground along the banks.
The Ghātāl area is well known for regular flooding during the monsoon, when the Shilabati and nearby rivers overflow.
