Maheshtala lies on the southwestern fringe of the Kolkata metropolitan area in West Bengal, close to the east bank of the Hooghly River. On a map it reads as part of a continuous urban belt: tightly packed neighbourhoods, a fine mesh of lanes and a few longer roads that link the town to the city centre to the north and to riverside industrial towns to the south.
The ground here is the flat, low-lying delta land typical of southern Bengal. Water is never far away, whether in the broad curve of the river, small ponds scattered between houses or drainage channels crossing the town. Much of the local economy has grown around small workshops and trades that serve the wider Kolkata region.
