From above, the town is a compact knot of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields, with irrigation canals drawing long lines across the farmland.
The area is well known for its green, well-watered landscape of paddy, banana and coconut groves, and it has been a popular location for Tamil film shoots for decades. The town itself serves as a market centre for the surrounding villages, with roads fanning out in several directions toward nearby towns.
