Gutao is the town that contains the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi province. Its most striking feature on a map is the city wall, a large, roughly rectangular enclosure dating from the Ming dynasty, still intact and surrounding a well-preserved grid of streets, courtyards and lanes.
Inside the walls, main streets cross at the centre, where the old market tower stands, and narrower lanes fill the blocks between them. Pingyao was a major banking centre in the Qing era, and former exchange houses line its streets. The ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside the wall, newer districts and the railway extend in straighter, wider patterns.
