Guyuan Map Poster
Guyuan is the main city of southern Ningxia, set in a valley on the Loess Plateau near the Liupan Mountains. The Qingshui River rises in the hills to the south and flows north past the city toward the Yellow River. The urban area stretches along the valley floor, bounded on both sides by dry, deeply folded loess terrain.
The city stands on an old route between the Chinese heartland and the northwest, and for many centuries it was an important frontier town. The best-known sites nearby include the Xumishan Grottoes, a group of Buddhist cave temples cut into sandstone cliffs northwest of the city. The Liupan Mountains to the south were crossed by the Red Army during the Long March.

The surrounding terrain, carved by gullies and terraced slopes, gives the edges of the map an unusually organic texture.
