Pingliang follows its valley. The city runs east to west along the Jing River, confined by the ridges and gullies of the Loess Plateau on both sides. From above, it forms a long, narrow band of streets that widens where the valley opens and narrows where the hills close in. The river and the main roads run side by side through most of its length.
The surrounding terrain is typical of eastern Gansu. Loess country is carved into branching ravines, and the map records this as a dense, tree-like pattern of small roads and terraces climbing away from the valley floor. Against that texture, the flat, orderly blocks of the city floor are easy to read, and the whole valley becomes a strong horizontal line.
West of the city rises Kongtong Mountain, long regarded as one of the important mountains of Taoism in China and a destination for pilgrims and walkers. A Pingliang map poster captures this relationship between the settled river corridor and the high, broken country around it. It is a city shaped almost entirely by the land it sits in.

On both sides of the valley, the eroded plateau appears as fine branching lines of tracks and terraces, a texture unlike anything found in lowland cities.
Towards Kongtong
To the west, the valley leads towards Kongtong Mountain, where the regular urban pattern gives way to winding roads through steeper, forested ground.
