Haan lies in the Mettmann district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the edge of the Bergisches Land between Düsseldorf, Solingen and Wuppertal. From above, it is not one continuous urban mass but a patchwork of compact residential areas separated by forests, fields and small stream valleys. Motorways and railway lines cross the map in strong diagonals and link it to its larger neighbours.
The town calls itself a Gartenstadt, or garden city, after the green space that surrounds and runs between its districts. The district of Gruiten, with its well-preserved historic village centre, lies in the Düssel valley near the Neander valley. Haan-Gruiten station is an important junction where lines from Düsseldorf, Cologne and Wuppertal meet.
