Hautmont lies in the far north of France, on the Sambre river close to Maubeuge and the Belgian border. From above, the river is the main feature. It winds through town in broad curves, with streets packed onto the land between the bends and rail lines cutting straight across the meanders.
The town grew with heavy industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially metalworking. Its layout still reflects that: large riverside plots once used by works and yards, rows of workers' housing, and a centre that feels practical rather than grand.
A Hautmont map poster brings out the contrast between the curving Sambre and the rigid lines of rail and industry laid over it. In black and white it has the graphic, slightly severe look of a town built around making things.
