Hedong is in the hilly interior of eastern Guangdong, where towns tend to occupy the flat ground along rivers, with wooded ridges on either side. From above, the built-up area follows the valley floor. Main roads run parallel to the water, and smaller lanes branch off towards farmland and the foot of the hills.
This part of the province is mostly rural and has close ties to Hakka culture. Settlement here is shaped by terrain more than by any formal plan. So the town's outline on a map is set largely by where the land levels off, and denser blocks give way to scattered buildings as the slopes begin.
