Houshan sits in the hill country of eastern Chongqing, a municipality where flat ground is the exception. On a map the town reads as a compact cluster of blocks pressed onto the valley floor, with roads that cannot run straight for long before a slope turns them. Around the built edge, the linework thins into lanes that follow the contours and scattered farm settlements.
