Huntsville sits in the Tennessee Valley of northern Alabama, and its map is shaped by terrain more than by any single plan. To the east, Monte Sano Mountain rises as a wooded plateau, pushing streets into curving switchbacks along its flanks. To the south, the Tennessee River draws a broad arc, and in between the city fills the valley floor with neighbourhoods and long commercial corridors.
The most unusual feature is Redstone Arsenal, a large federal installation southwest of downtown that houses NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. It appears as a wide area of sparse roads beside the dense city, and it explains why Huntsville is called the Rocket City: rockets for the American space programme, including the Saturn V, were developed here.
Downtown, a compact older grid gathers around Big Spring Park, where the natural spring that drew early settlers still feeds a small pool. Memorial Parkway runs north to south as the city's spine.
