Ichalkaranji is an industrial city in Kolhapur district, in the south of Maharashtra. It is widely known as the Manchester of Maharashtra for its powerloom and textile industry, which has shaped its economy and its streets for generations. From above, it appears as a compact, densely built town surrounded by the farmland of the Panchganga valley.
The city's fabric is tightly woven, fittingly. Narrow lanes run between workshops, homes and small factories, with a few main roads cutting through toward Kolhapur, Sangli and the surrounding villages. The Panchganga River passes nearby, its curves and floodplain adding a soft, irregular line to an otherwise dense and angular map.
