Kolhāpur Map Poster
Kolhāpur lies in southwestern Maharashtra, east of the Sahyadri range, beside the Panchganga River that passes the northern side of the city. Its map is built around a few fixed points: the old core of narrow, irregular lanes around the Mahalaxmi temple, the wide sheet of Rankala Lake to the west, and newer districts that spread along straighter roads to the east and south.
The Mahalaxmi temple, also called Ambabai, draws pilgrims from across the region. The city was once the seat of a princely state whose rulers included Shahu Maharaj, who is remembered for his social reforms. Kolhāpur is also known throughout India for Kolhapuri chappals, the hand-made leather sandals, and for its spicy regional cooking.
