Ikwiriri lies in the Rufiji district of Pwani Region, in the low country south of Dar es Salaam near the lower course of the Rufiji River, one of Tanzania's largest. On a map the town is a loose network of streets along the main road. Around it stretches a wide landscape of fields, wetlands and river channels that change with the seasons.
Life here is tied to the river. The Rufiji's floods renew the soils of the plain, where rice and other crops are grown. Downstream the river spreads into one of the largest mangrove deltas in East Africa. Upstream lies the vast protected area of Nyerere National Park, once part of the Selous Game Reserve.
