Morogoro lies in eastern Tanzania at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, which rise abruptly just south of the town. On the map the contrast is immediate: the built area spreads across gentler ground to the north, while the mountains fill the southern edge with steep, largely open terrain crossed by only a few winding roads.
The street network is loose and irregular, with a small central grid giving way to scattered neighbourhoods along the main roads. Streams run down from the mountains through the town, and the highway between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma passes nearby, as does the central railway line, both giving the map a few strong, long lines.
Morogoro is the capital of Morogoro Region and home to Sokoine University of Agriculture. Its fertile surroundings make it an important farming centre, and the Ulugurus are known for their forests and biodiversity.
