Ioánnina Map Poster & Print
Ioánnina is the capital of Epirus in northwestern Greece. It lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis, with the steep ridge of Mount Mitsikeli rising across the water. On a map the lake takes up a large part of the frame, and the city's streets press up against its shoreline in a dense crescent.
The old town sits inside the walls of the Kastro, a fortified promontory that reaches into the lake. It is closely linked with Ali Pasha, the Ottoman-era ruler whose seat was here in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. A short distance offshore, a small inhabited island sits in the lake and is reached by boat.
