Ipueiras sits in the interior of Ceará, in the semi-arid country that covers much of north-eastern Brazil. From above, the urban area is small and tightly drawn: a cluster of blocks around a central core, with a handful of roads leaving it toward neighbouring towns and farms. Past the last houses, the map opens into wide, lightly marked land.
That contrast is what gives the town its character on paper. Inside, streets meet at near right angles and the blocks are close together. Outside, lines become sparse and irregular, following watercourses that run only in the rainy season, field boundaries and dirt roads. The edge between the two is sharp, so the settlement reads clearly as one place.
