Ischia is the largest comune on the island of the same name, at the northern entrance to the Bay of Naples. The town stretches along the eastern shore, from the harbour district of Ischia Porto to Ischia Ponte further south. On a map, the coastline and the island's volcanic shape define almost every line.
The harbour itself is unusual. It sits in a small round basin, originally a crater lake, which was opened to the sea in the nineteenth century under the Bourbon king Ferdinand II. From above it appears as an almost perfect circle cut into the shore, surrounded by quays, streets and moored boats.
At Ischia Ponte, a long stone causeway leads to the Castello Aragonese, a fortified rock rising from the sea. Behind the town, streets climb towards the green slopes and the island's thermal springs. An Ischia map poster brings together crater harbour, castle and coastline in one composition.
