Itarema lies on the northwestern coast of Ceará, the part of Brazil's northeast where steady trade winds shape dunes, lagoons and wide beaches. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets set back from the shore. Sandy tracks lead out to fishing communities strung along the coast.
The district of Almofala belongs to the municipality. Its colonial church was swallowed by moving dunes for decades and later emerged again as the sands shifted. The same coast is home to Tremembé communities. Sea-turtle conservation work also takes place on the local beaches, which gives this quiet stretch of shoreline a wider significance.
