Jahrom lies in the south of Fars Province, in a valley lower and warmer than the Shiraz region to the north-west. On a map the town appears as a dense centre of narrow streets surrounded by a wide belt of orchards, and the transition from built blocks to garden plots is the defining feature of the drawing.
The area is known across Iran for its dates and citrus fruit, and the palm groves around the town show up as fine, irregular parcels threaded with lanes and irrigation lines. Beyond them, bare ridges run roughly parallel to one another, part of the folded mountain country of the Zagros.
