Jaleshwar is the headquarters of Mahottari District in Nepal's Madhesh Province. It lies in the Terai, the flat, fertile lowland that runs along the southern edge of the country. The town is right on the border with the Indian state of Bihar, and people and goods move across it daily. Its name is associated with an old Shiva temple, which is a local place of pilgrimage.
The map shows a dense town centre of narrow lanes and market streets, with the flat plain opening out on every side. Ponds and temple tanks appear as small open shapes within the fabric of the town. Beyond it, fields stretch to the horizon, crossed by roads leading north into Nepal and south toward India.
