Jatāra is a town in Tikamgarh district, in the Bundelkhand region of northern Madhya Pradesh. From above, it appears as a tight, irregular cluster of lanes set in wide agricultural land. Several country roads meet at the centre, and the built-up area thins quickly into fields on every side.
The Bundelkhand landscape is shaped by its water management. Across the region, historic tanks and reservoirs collect monsoon rain, and these bodies of water appear on the map as smooth shapes among the field boundaries. The town's streets are organic rather than planned. They bend around older plots and open into small market spaces.
