Jerada lies in Morocco's Oriental region, on a high, dry plateau not far from the Algerian border. From above, the town is a spread of streets across uneven hilly ground, with neighbourhoods separated by open land. The terrain is bare and rocky, and the landscape around the town is marked by old mining sites and spoil heaps.
Jerada was built around coal. For decades it was Morocco's main coal-mining centre, and the town grew to house the miners and their families. The official mine closed around the end of the 1990s, which hit the local economy hard. The town's story since then has been about finding a way forward after the industry that created it ended.
