Jiangnan is a locality within Chongqing municipality in south-western China. The name means south of the river, a common place name in a region shaped by the Yangtze and its tributaries. Like much of Chongqing, the terrain here is hilly. Roads wind with the contours instead of running straight, and buildings cluster where the ground allows.
From above, the settlement looks like a series of built-up pockets connected by curving roads, with farmland, terraces and wooded slopes in between. Water is never far away in this part of China, and river channels and valleys give the map its main lines. Newer roads with gentle curves pass through older, tighter street patterns.
