Jirapa is the capital of its municipality in the Upper West Region of Ghana, in the dry savanna of the country's far north. The town centre forms a compact cluster of streets where roads from surrounding communities meet. Beyond it, the map opens into farmland dotted with family compounds, a settlement pattern typical of the Dagaaba areas of the northwest.
Jirapa is known as the site of one of the early Catholic missions in northern Ghana, and the church, schools and hospital that grew around it remain central to town life. The regional capital, Wa, lies to the south, linked by road. Farming follows the rhythm of a single rainy season, with long dry months in between.
