Jizhou is a district of Hengshui in southern Hebei, set on the flat North China Plain. Its town centre appears on a map as a compact grid of streets with an older core at its heart, while fields spread out in regular plots in every direction, crossed by straight country roads and drainage channels.
The name recalls one of the Nine Provinces of ancient Chinese tradition, and the character Ji is still used as the short name for Hebei province today. That long history gives the district an importance larger than its present size would suggest to anyone who knows the geography of northern China.
A Jizhou map poster is shaped above all by Hengshui Lake, a large freshwater lake and wetland nature reserve lying just to the northeast of the town. Its wide open surface and marshy edges fill part of the composition with calm, empty space, set against the tight lines of streets and farmland.
