Cangzhou lies in south-eastern Hebei, on the flat North China Plain between Beijing, Tianjin and the Bohai coast. The land is so level that almost every feature on the map is man-made: broad avenues, rail lines, rectangular city blocks and the long, curving course of the Grand Canal, which passes directly through the urban area on its way north toward Tianjin.
The canal is the city's most distinctive line. Where roads and neighbourhoods follow a strict orthogonal plan, the waterway meanders in wide, gentle bends, with parks and promenades along its banks. Since 2014 the Grand Canal has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Cangzhou's stretch is one of the longest held by any single city along its route.
The city is also known across China as a home of traditional martial arts, and for the Iron Lion of Cangzhou, a large cast-iron sculpture from the tenth century that stands south-east of the city.
