Juiz de Fora grew along the valley of the Paraibuna River in south-eastern Minas Gerais, and its map follows that line. The river runs the length of the city, and the densest streets sit on the flatter land beside it. On both sides the terrain rises into hills, so neighbourhoods climb upward and roads bend to follow the contours.
The centre is organised around a few long avenues. The best known is Avenida Rio Branco, which runs parallel to the river for several kilometres. Around it the blocks are tighter and more regular, while beyond the centre the pattern breaks up into winding streets across the slopes. Morro do Imperador, a hill above the city, gives the classic view from above.
In the nineteenth century Juiz de Fora became one of the first industrial cities in Minas Gerais, which earned it the nickname Manchester Mineira, and it is home to a large federal university. Beyond the valley floor, neighbourhoods spread up the surrounding slopes. Streets curve and branch to follow the terrain, which gives the edges of the map a looser, organic texture.
