Jūybār lies on the flat, fertile coastal plain of Māzandarān, a short distance south of the Caspian Sea. The name refers to streams, fitting for a landscape crossed by small rivers and irrigation channels. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded on all sides by the fine pattern of flooded rice fields.
This is one of Iran's main rice-growing areas, and the fields around the town divide the land into small, irregular plots. Villages line the roads between them. A Jūybār map poster shows the town as a dense cluster within a landscape that looks almost woven, with lines of water and road running through it.
The larger cities of Qaem Shahr and Sari lie nearby, linked by roads across the plain. To the north the land continues flat to the Caspian coast, and to the south it rises toward the forested Alborz.
