Kamalasai is a district town in Kalasin province, in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand. It lies on the broad Khorat Plateau, where the land is so level that water shapes almost everything. On a map the town appears as a small, fairly compact grid, with main roads running through the centre and residential lanes branching off into the surrounding countryside.
Beyond the town, rice paddies stretch in all directions, divided by low bunds into a fine mesh of small plots. Farm ponds and reservoirs are scattered across the land, and the Chi River, one of the principal rivers of Isan, flows through the lowlands to the south, with a broad meandering course. In black and white, the fields become a delicate texture around the settlement.
Kalasin province is known for its dinosaur fossil finds and for traditions of Isan music and silk weaving. A Kamalasai map poster shows the quieter, everyday landscape of the region: a town set among its fields, drawn with the same precision as any capital.
