Kanash grew up around the railway in the Chuvash Republic, and the tracks still dominate its map. Several lines meet here, forming a wide band of sidings and yards that divides the town. Residential neighbourhoods sit on either side in a mostly regular pattern of streets and blocks. From above, the effect is orderly and strongly linear.
Away from the railway, the town mixes low private houses on small plots with Soviet-era apartment blocks. On the map these appear as two textures: a fine, even grid of lanes and larger, more open blocks. Around the edges, the fields and woodland of the Chuvash countryside frame the settlement.
