Kanevskaya is a stanitsa in the north of Krasnodar Krai, on the flat, fertile plain that stretches across the Kuban region toward the Sea of Azov. It is the administrative centre of its district and is often counted among the largest stanitsas in Russia, a rural settlement that has grown to the size of a town.
From above, the settlement is laid out in long, straight streets forming a broad grid, with houses set on generous plots and gardens. The small Chelbas River winds across the landscape, its course marked by ponds and green banks, while cultivated fields extend in every direction beyond the last streets.
The stanitsa traces its origins to the Black Sea Cossacks who settled the Kuban in the late eighteenth century, and the regular plan reflects that planned settlement.
