Kanye is the administrative centre of Botswana's Southern District and the traditional seat of the Bangwaketse people. Unlike much of the country, which is flat and sandy, Kanye sits among rocky hills, and the settlement grew around and over them. This makes its map unusually varied for Botswana, with roads curving around high ground and neighbourhoods spread across slopes and valleys.
Like other large Tswana settlements, Kanye developed in wards, each historically centred on a kgotla, the traditional meeting place where community matters are discussed. The result on the map is a loose, clustered pattern rather than a single planned grid. The Kanye Gorge, a narrow cleft in the hills near the town, adds a dramatic natural feature to the surrounding landscape.
