Kārakkād is a settlement in central Kerala, set in the low, green country that lies between the coast and the Western Ghats. Like much of this part of the state, it does not form a compact town in the usual sense: homes, shops and places of worship are spread along roads and lanes, each surrounded by its own garden plot.
On a map this creates a distinctive, lace-like pattern. Roads branch and curve around gentle rises of higher ground, paddy fields occupy the flatter, lower land as open spaces, and ponds and small streams appear as scattered marks. There is no single grid, only a dense web of paths that has grown slowly around farming and daily life.
