Karera is in Shivpuri district in northern Madhya Pradesh, on the plateau country between Gwalior and Jhansi. The land here is mostly open, with farmland and dry grassland, low rocky ridges and scattered water tanks.
The area is known for the Karera Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established to protect the Great Indian Bustard, a large grassland bird now critically endangered. On the map, the town has a compact centre, with a highway running through it and village roads branching out into the country.
