Kasihan is a district in Bantul Regency, just southwest of the city of Yogyakarta. On a map, it sits where the city's dense streets start to give way to villages and rice fields. The main roads radiate from Yogyakarta, and between them lies a web of village lanes and irrigation lines.
The pattern is uneven. Near the city boundary, housing is tight and the streets close together. Further south and west, small hamlets appear as separate clusters within farmland. The large campus of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta forms a distinct block of buildings and open ground in the district.
