Kattur sits in the Thrissur district of central Kerala, on the flat, well-watered strip of land between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. From above it does not look like a compact town. Houses spread out along lanes and roads, and the gaps between them are filled with coconut groves, fields and small bodies of water.
This scattered, ribbon-like pattern is common across Kerala, where villages and towns merge into each other along road corridors. Around Kattur, the road network forms a loose mesh of curving routes. Canals and low wetlands lie in between, some of them part of the region's wider network of backwaters and drainage channels near the coast.
